Fiji Government Vows Tough Action After Attack on Civil Servants

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo has strongly condemned the recent attack on civil servants in Vusasivo, Cakaudrove, where government officers were reportedly assaulted, and a government vehicle was damaged while they were performing official duties. Vosarogo described this behavior as utterly unacceptable and emphasized the need for accountability for those involved.

Highlighting the dedication of civil servants to their communities, Vosarogo stated that violence or intimidation against them is intolerable. His remarks echoed a growing concern about the harassment faced by public workers, including nurses, doctors, and teachers who serve the nation diligently. He expressed disappointment over the ongoing reports of mistreatment directed at these essential workers.

The Acting Prime Minister vowed that the government would respond with the full force of the law to anyone involved in the attack or theft from the injured officers. As part of the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its civil servants, he revealed that the Commissioner of Police has dispatched an operations team from Savusavu to conduct a thorough investigation and make necessary arrests.

To further protect government workers, Vosarogo advised them to request police escorts when performing field duties in areas perceived to be dangerous, underscoring the importance of their safety while providing essential services to the public. He also conveyed his best wishes to the injured officers, confirming that most have now received treatment and returned home, while one remains under medical observation.

By taking decisive action against violence towards civil servants, the government aims to foster a culture of respect and safety within communities, reinforcing the value and importance of public service. These efforts signify a crucial step towards enhancing the relationship between civil servants and the communities they serve, with hope that such incidents will lead to a greater recognition of their invaluable contributions.
