The Government has responded to recent concerns raised by Dialogue Fiji regarding the National Referendum Bill 2025, addressing accusations of the proposed legislation being “undemocratic.” In an official statement, the Government clarified that the Bill is designed to ensure a fair, transparent, and orderly referendum process in line with constitutional requirements.
The Government pointed out that the provisions in question, which Dialogue Fiji claims may restrict public discourse, actually reflect current electoral laws and comply with international standards. They emphasized that any provisions perceived as limiting will be carefully considered during the Parliamentary Standing Committee’s review, which is open to input from civil society organizations, the media, and the general public.
Additionally, the Government reassured the public that the Bill aims to encourage responsible dialogue while safeguarding the referendum process against misinformation. It confirmed that the Supervisor of Elections will independently oversee any national referendum, with extensive consultations planned across the country prior to any constitutional votes.
To further mitigate misunderstandings, the Government stressed the importance of effective communication channels, particularly in media interactions. It reiterated its commitment to transparent legislative practices and collaboration with all stakeholders, urging Dialogue Fiji to engage in established processes that would bolster public confidence in the referendum’s administration.
This proactive stance signals the Government’s commitment to civic engagement and upholding democratic values. It reflects an optimistic outlook for fostering an informed public discourse as the country prepares for the upcoming referendum.
