The Office of the Prime Minister has taken an initiative to bolster the agricultural sector in Fiji by gifting a new 51-horsepower tractor to New Valley Processors Fiji in Ra. This contribution, valued at nearly $50,000, was marked by a ceremony in Vatuka Village, officiated by Sakiusa Tubuna, the Assistant Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office. Tubuna pointed out that the tractor stands as a symbol of advancement, empowerment, and a strengthened partnership with rural communities.
The funding for this essential piece of machinery is drawn from the 2025–2026 Development Grant budget. Its primary goal is to aid 21 farmer cluster groups in Ra, positively affecting the lives of over 10,000 farmers in Ra, Ba, and Nadroga/Navosa. By introducing mechanization, the initiative aims to cut labor costs significantly and boost efficiency, which in turn, enhances food security.
Moreover, the tractor is expected to significantly increase the cultivation of key crops like cowpeas and cassava, catering to both local needs and export demands. In a nod to international collaboration, the Assistant Minister recognized India’s contribution of five tonnes of cowpea seeds, underscoring the foreign support that will help further elevate farm output.
This donation aligns with similar initiatives across the nation aimed at refining agricultural techniques and offering modern farming equipment to rural areas. Such efforts are part of a larger strategy to rejuvenate Fiji’s agricultural landscape by increasing efficiency, reducing reliance on manual labor, and boosting overall productivity. Previous endeavors in regions such as Nadi have demonstrated positive results, empowering local farming communities, enhancing agricultural production, and encouraging youth involvement in farming.
