A significant case has emerged involving Shonal Sharma, a 40-year-old General Manager of a mechanical company, who has been remanded in custody after being charged with the importation of over 600 grams of cocaine. Sharma appeared before Magistrate Viniana Diroiroi, where he was informed of the charges stemming from a suspicious shipment that arrived in Fiji last week. The consignment, mistakenly labeled as a “smoke machine,” was intercepted due to its dubious nature, leading to a joint operation by the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service.
During the inspection, drug detector dogs identified the package, which upon examination, was found to contain a motherboard concealed within a black covering, housing approximately 640 grams of cocaine. This extensive operation, part of a wider crackdown on drug trafficking in Fiji, also led to the arrest of three other individuals connected to the case.
Prosecution lawyer Eoghn Samisoni strongly objected to bail, citing the serious implications of the charges. In response, Magistrate Diroiroi instructed defense counsel Feizal Haniff to file a formal bail application, setting the stage for a bail hearing scheduled for this Friday.
