As New Year celebrations approach, law enforcement has reported a notable rise in traffic violations and arrests for drunk driving. In a mere 48-hour period, police documented 256 cases of speeding and made 23 arrests for driving under the influence. The majority of these arrests—19 out of 23—took place in Suva, underscoring a significant area of concern regarding traffic safety.
During this same timeframe, police conducted 171 random breath tests across the country, resulting in four drivers in Nadi being detained for intoxicated driving. The data indicates a total of 14 drunk driving arrests nationwide, coinciding with increased traffic volumes as families travel for the holidays and year-end celebrations.
Authorities have expressed grave concerns over these statistics, noting that speeding and driving under the influence are primary contributors to road fatalities in Fiji. In response to these alarming figures, police will intensify their presence on the roads, particularly in areas known for high traffic and accident rates as the New Year nears.
Law enforcement officials are urging motorists to adhere to traffic regulations by slowing down, avoiding alcohol consumption before driving, and planning their routes in advance. They stress the importance of responsible behavior on the roads during the festive season to avert potentially tragic incidents. This initiative aims to ensure that celebrations remain safe and enjoyable for everyone, fostering a spirit of community and caution as families usher in the New Year.
