According to Inspector Salote Lutunauga, a police liaison officer at the Online Safety Commission, the growing number of over 544,000 active social media users in Fiji has heightened the risks of cyberattacks, scams, and online fraud. Despite facing resource constraints, the Fiji Police Force remains committed to leading investigations with the support of specialized tools and infrastructure.
Lutunauga noted that the rise of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven attacks introduces further complexities to the cyber threat landscape. Many individuals, even those who are well-informed, often struggle to navigate the digital world securely. To combat this, community officers are receiving training focused on imparting crucial digital protection advice and raising awareness at the grassroots level.
Commissioner Filipe Batiwale emphasized the need to enhance Fiji’s capabilities to safeguard its citizens against cybercrime. He remarked, “We cannot protect our people with shields full of holes,” referencing the ongoing assessment of the Online Safety Act. The Commission is analyzing leading global frameworks and seeks to acquire enhanced powers to better respond to evolving cyber threats.
Reports indicate a concerning trend, with nearly 650 scam cases currently under investigation, emphasizing the need for action to ensure the safety of Fiji’s online spaces. Justice Minister Siromi Turaga reiterated the government’s commitment to improving legal frameworks and strengthening law enforcement capabilities to combat these issues effectively.
