Fiji is gearing up for a significant test of its disaster preparedness with the forthcoming Exercise Bougainville 2026. This initiative is aimed at enhancing the country’s response capabilities to disasters and emerging security threats, and it is drawing together numerous key government agencies.

The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Mosese Bulitavu, received a comprehensive briefing from senior officials of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces about the plans and importance of this national exercise. The drill will not only serve as a major Land Forces Field Training Exercise for the RFMF but also focus on improving coordination among various government entities.

Bulitavu emphasized that Exercise Bougainville 2026 is both timely and crucial, particularly in light of the recently implemented National Disaster Risk Management Act. The exercise presents a critical opportunity to assess and enhance the nation’s disaster readiness, inter-agency collaboration, and emergency response systems under the new legal framework.

Reassuring his Ministry’s dedication to these initiatives, Bulitavu underscored the importance of cooperation with the RFMF and partner agencies. The aim is to ensure that Fiji’s national systems can remain resilient, responsive, and prepared to protect both urban and rural communities during crises.

As Fiji prepares for this important exercise, the commitment to enhance disaster preparedness not only reflects the country’s proactive approach to managing risks but also fosters hope for stronger community safety in the face of potential challenges.
