The Fijian Government has reinforced its commitment to unity and inclusivity with the inauguration of the Valebasoga Jame Mosque Fencing Project in Labasa on Wednesday, November 13, 2025. This development, valued at $9,833 and funded through the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs’ Multi-Ethnic Grant Program, features a new cement boundary fence, communal storage shelves, and upgraded tile facilities.
The enhancements are designed to improve security, hygiene, and usability for the 250-member Muslim community in Valebasoga. According to Charan Jeath Singh, Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, this initiative is a testament to the government’s dedication to strengthening community ties and fostering shared values among diverse populations.
Minister Singh remarked, “This project reflects how Government is investing at the grassroots level to promote unity and togetherness among our diverse communities.” The Valebasoga Jame Mosque serves not only as a space for worship but also as a platform where individuals from various backgrounds can connect and cultivate harmony.
Mr. Munabbar, a member of the mosque committee, expressed appreciation for the government’s support, stating that the upgrades will make the mosque a safer and more inviting environment for families to gather for prayers, education, and community activities. He noted, “These improvements will protect our mosque and create a better environment for families.”
This project aligns with broader initiatives observed across the nation, as the Coalition Government continues to promote social cohesion, cultural respect, and communal well-being. Similar projects, such as a newly constructed fence for the Vatukarasa Muslim community in Nadroga, reflect a consistent effort by the government to empower local organizations and reinforce social bonds through the Multi-Ethnic Grant Program. Minister Singh has previously highlighted that such projects are essential in providing a safe and respectful environment for all community members.
Moreover, the increase in funding for the Multi-Ethnic Grant Program from $1.2 million to $2 million this year demonstrates the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting diverse communities in Fiji.
