The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has acknowledged the persistent flooding problems on Malakua Road in Qeleloa, Nadi, and has laid out a master plan for significant infrastructure improvements. In the interim, the FRA is conducting maintenance work designed to alleviate current challenges during heavy rainfall. This includes essential tasks such as grading, compaction, and where necessary, re-sheeting the roads.
Looking towards long-term solutions, the FRA has revealed an extensive strategy aimed at upgrading the drainage system along with replacing the Nakia Bridge. The proposed enhancements will involve raising the road level above the surrounding sugarcane fields and modifying the drainage system to effectively manage surface water runoff from both the road and its vicinity.
The FRA has confirmed that these permanent upgrades, alongside the Nakia Bridge replacement, are slated for the financial year 2036-2027. Given that Malakua Road is a key route for children walking to school, the FRA plans to implement additional cross culverts adjacent to the existing structure to facilitate quicker water discharge during heavy rains.
In light of concerns from residents regarding the quality of work carried out by subcontractors, the FRA assures the public that rigorous monitoring and quality checks are performed during and after construction. Any issues pertaining to workmanship will require contractors to address and rectify the concerns at their own expense.
This proactive approach not only addresses immediate flooding concerns but also ensures the long-term resilience of infrastructure in Nadi, supporting the local community and enhancing safety for its residents.
