A newly constructed 30-metre footbridge in Yaro Village, Malolo, is set to transform the daily lives of 60 children who previously faced daunting challenges on their way to school. The $25,000 project provides a reliable and safe pathway for students walking the six-kilometre journey to Malolo District School in Solevu Village. Previously, heavy rain forced these children to make hazardous crossings on makeshift paths of rocks and logs, sometimes leaving them stranded at home. This bridge ensures they will no longer have to miss school due to adverse weather conditions.
Sevanaia Nasibi, Head of Malolo District School, expressed deep appreciation for the development, pointing out the long-lasting benefits it will have for the children and the community. The footbridge was made possible through the efforts of Ahura Resorts and Rosie Travel Group, with Tony Whitton, the managing director, inspired to act after hearing stories of the difficulties faced by the local children.
The bridge’s funding was provided by the Ahura Resorts Conservation Foundation, with Likuliku and Malolo Resorts supplying the necessary labour and materials. Whitton emphasized that education and capacity building for resource owners are a top priority and that this new infrastructure will ensure that children safely reach school on time.
The unveiling of the footbridge was a moment of celebration for students, teachers, and the community, demonstrating how private sector involvement and dedication to community welfare can lead to meaningful improvements in everyday life. This project echoes similar efforts in other areas, such as Nailagobokala Primary School in Naitasiri, where communities have also banded together for infrastructure to ensure safe journeys for schoolchildren.
This initiative in Malolo not only marks a practical improvement but also stands as a testament to the power of community support and collaboration, underscoring the positive impact of private organizations stepping in to address local challenges. It highlights the potential for significant local developments to enhance safety, education, and overall quality of life, contributing hope and a brighter future for the next generation.
