Health inspectors have intensified their efforts to ensure food safety compliance in Nadi, Sigatoka, and Lautoka. This initiative has resulted in significant enforcement actions against several businesses found to be violating hygiene standards and licensing requirements.
The operation is part of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services’ ongoing campaign to maintain national food safety standards and safeguard public health. Recently, inspectors issued 29 Abatement and Illegal Operation Notices to establishments failing to comply with the Food Safety Act, highlighting a pressing need for improved hygiene practices in the food service sector. Notably, two businesses—a supermarket and a restaurant—were ordered to close after disregarding a 24-hour Abatement Notice, underscoring the severe ramifications associated with repeated breaches of the regulations.
Currently stationed in Nadi, the inspection team is set to extend their operations to Lautoka next week. Authorities have reiterated the importance of legal compliance for business owners under the Food Safety Act, emphasizing their responsibility to provide clean, safe, and quality food to customers.
A spokesperson for the health unit reaffirmed the Ministry’s willingness to pursue legal action against any business that continues to infringe upon established regulations. In the past two years, there have been several successful prosecutions, showcasing the Ministry’s dedication to enforcing food safety laws rigorously.
To bolster these efforts, the Ministry is reviewing the Food Safety Act to implement stricter enforcement measures, including fixed penalties for non-compliance, thereby aiming to deter future violations.
Despite the heavy-handed approach, the Ministry of Health remains supportive of local businesses, offering free training on Good Hygiene Practices (GHP) and basic food safety. Health officials are urging all food service providers to prioritize hygiene and compliance, emphasizing that the well-being of the entire community depends on food safety.
These proactive measures not only aim to protect consumers but also foster a culture of accountability and support for compliant businesses, contributing to a healthier and more responsible food environment in Fiji. The ongoing commitment from health authorities reflects a positive trajectory towards enhanced food safety standards, ensuring that all citizens can enjoy safe, high-quality meals.
