Search operations have resumed this morning for two individuals believed to have drowned in separate incidents in the Northern and Western Divisions of Fiji, where severe weather conditions have posed significant challenges to rescue efforts.
In the first incident, a 65-year-old man from Cogea Village was swept away while trying to cross a flooded river near his home yesterday afternoon. Initial search efforts were hampered by submerged roads and waterlogged crossings, making it difficult for police to access the village. Law enforcement officials are maintaining close communication with local community members to enhance the search.
Meanwhile, a five-year-old foreign national was swept away by strong currents near the Biausevu waterfall in Sigatoka. Despite deploying search operations, rescuers have yet to locate the child.
The Fiji police, alongside community volunteers, are committed to continuing their search in both areas. The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a bulletin stating that heavy rain and flood warnings remain active throughout the country.
Given the perilous conditions, police have urged the public to follow safety warnings closely, highlighting their critical importance in safeguarding lives. Parents and guardians are advised to keep a close watch on their children, while all citizens are warned against crossing flooded roads or swimming in swollen rivers.
Authorities express hope that by adhering to safety guidelines, the community can navigate these trying times together, fostering resilience and collaboration as they seek to resolve these unfortunate incidents.
