Motorists in Fiji’s Western Division are being urged to exercise extreme caution as ongoing heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding, rendering many roads and crossings impassable. Authorities have confirmed the closure and restricted access of several routes in areas including Rakiraki, Lautoka, Ba, and Tavua, making it crucial for drivers to follow official road closure notices to prevent accidents.
In Rakiraki, key crossings such as Katudrau, Narara 1, Drana Crossing on Korotale Road, FSC Road, and Waimari Road are fully closed. Moreover, certain sections of Kings Road, particularly between the Volivoli Road Junction and Ellington, are accessible only to four-wheel-drive and larger vehicles.
Lautoka has also experienced significant flooding, leading to the shutdown of various crossings along the Irish stretch of Saru Back Road, Vaivai Road, Navula Road, Drasa Dam Road, and Abaca Road. Additionally, part of Buabua Road is limited to a single lane, and access to some crossings is restricted to four-wheel-drive vehicles.
In Ba and Tavua, flooding has prompted the closure of multiple crossings including Vatuyaka, Varadoli, Cemetery Road, Koula Road, Marinitawa Road, and Vunisamaloa Road, alongside other routes on Dramasi Road. Many areas are navigable only for high-clearance vehicles.
Authorities are stressing the importance of safety, advising road users not to attempt to cross flooded areas and to remain alert while planning their travels until conditions improve. Community cooperation in adhering to these safety measures is essential, and there is a shared hope that water levels will recede soon, allowing for safer travel in the region once again.
