The identity of the officer from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) allegedly involved with former journalist Charlie Charters in the unauthorized dissemination of official information remains unknown.

During a court hearing yesterday, Defence lawyer Seforan Fatiaki informed Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne that he had received further disclosures from FICAC prosecutor Rusiate Doidoi. Charters is facing two counts of aiding and abetting a FICAC officer in leaking official information, as per Section 45 of the Crimes Act and Section 13G of the FICAC Act.

According to FICAC, between November 2 and December 14, 2025, and February of this year, Charters is accused of intentionally assisting a FICAC officer in committing an offense by publishing sensitive information regarding FICAC operations on his Facebook page without the necessary permission from the FICAC Commissioner.

Charters also applied to modify his bail conditions to permit travel to Australia for employment reasons, a motion that the prosecution contested. His legal team describes him as a Hong Kong resident passing through Fiji to obtain his Fijian passport, but needing to attend a work-related event in Sydney. Notably, Charters holds dual citizenship in Fiji and the United Kingdom.

While his bail has been extended, the case has been adjourned, with a hearing scheduled for today, March 3. This case highlights ongoing issues around the protection of sensitive information and the responsibilities of those within public institutions.
