A 34-year-old Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Inspector has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the tragic incident that resulted in the death of 21-year-old Komal Kumar, who fell from a Ferris wheel at Vodafone Arena in Suva in June 2023. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) confirmed that the inspector faces charges under Sections 240 and 241(5) of the Crimes Act, with an appearance in the Suva Magistrates Court anticipated today.
The accident not only claimed Kumar’s life but also left two others, a mother and daughter identified as Ravina and Supriya Reshma, injured. Eyewitnesses reported that the Ferris wheel malfunctioned, accelerating uncontrollably, which resulted in the unfortunate fall of the passengers.
Authorities are reportedly on the lookout for a second individual connected to the ongoing investigation, highlighting the seriousness with which the incident is being treated. In the wake of the tragedy, the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations took immediate action by instituting a nationwide ban on all Ferris wheel operations in Fiji to ensure public safety.
The investigation has ignited lively discussions around accountability, with emotional appeals from Kumar’s family alongside public figures such as Mahendra Chaudhry, leader of the Fiji Labour Party, demanding quicker resolutions and more transparency in the handling of the case.
In light of this incident, both the government and various stakeholders have expressed their commitment to strengthening safety measures and protocols concerning amusement rides. The police and the National Occupational Health and Safety Service continue their thorough investigation to determine the full scope of any regulatory violations that may have contributed to this tragic accident.
Although this case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can accompany public amusement rides, it also highlights a collective determination to enhance safety standards. There is hope that through rigorous investigation and improved public safety initiatives, similar tragedies can be prevented in the future, ensuring a safer environment for all amusement park visitors.
