FCCC Partners with Media to Boost Consumer Rights Awareness in Fiji

Fiji FCCC Launches Media Partnership and New App for Consumer Rights

The Fijian Competition Consumer Commission (FCCC) is strengthening its collaboration with the media to enhance consumer awareness and understanding of rights and competition laws. This initiative was introduced at a media mixer and orientation, where FCCC officials outlined their roles, operational limitations, and inter-agency partnerships. During the event, the importance of responsible reporting was emphasized, particularly with respect to ongoing investigations.

Jai Kumar, Senior Communications Officer at the FCCC, underscored how critical the media’s role is in engaging with audiences that might otherwise be inaccessible. He stated, “Your support is vital in helping us educate the public.” Kumar noted that while the FCCC often cannot publicly name entities involved in investigations due to legal restrictions, journalists are encouraged to independently access court records and publish verified information.

The FCCC’s initiatives are rooted in a commitment to transparency and advocacy, especially regarding the challenges of publicly naming individuals during investigations. This focus occurs in a broader context where the FCCC has made strides to enforce compliance across various sectors, conducting rigorous inspections and addressing public safety and pricing standards for essential goods.

A significant development is the introduction of an official app by the FCCC, which simplifies the complaint submission process and makes information about consumer rights more accessible. This aligns with previous efforts where the FCCC sought to work in cooperation with businesses to foster a fair trading environment free from exploitation and unethical practices.

As the FCCC enhances its proactive monitoring and enforcement strategies, the collaboration with media aims to build greater trust among consumers in Fiji. This hopeful approach ensures that individuals are better informed and protected, while contributing to a transparent marketplace that promotes ethical business conduct.
