The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has officially suspended the implementation of the new electricity tariff rates initially set to take effect this Thursday. This decision allows for a 21-day consultation period, inviting feedback from various stakeholders, including consumer groups, businesses, government departments, and social organizations.
In their statement, the FCCC emphasized that all interested parties are encouraged to submit their comments regarding the revised tariff rates. This move follows the Commission’s earlier announcement of the new electricity rates, which came after a comprehensive regulatory assessment of the proposal submitted by Energy Fiji Limited.
The FCCC maintains that the original determination was made in accordance with statutory requirements and compliance with their established regulatory procedures, ensuring the process remains lawful and sound. Following the announcement, public reaction has been mixed, with many expressing heightened interest in the new rates.
To facilitate transparency, the FCCC plans to publish a non-confidential version of Energy Fiji Limited’s submission from May 2025 on its website, along with the Electricity Tariff Methodology for public access. Residents and concerned citizens are welcomed to share their opinions through written submissions, and the FCCC will also reach out to stakeholders as part of this consultation effort.
Reaffirming its independence and commitment to a fair regulatory framework, the FCCC stated that all decisions are made based on evidence and due process to serve both consumers and the broader Fijian economy. Further details about the consultation process will be provided in due course, aiming to foster an inclusive dialogue surrounding electricity tariff changes. This approach reflects the FCCC’s dedication to engaging with the community and considering their input in shaping critical energy policies.
