The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has issued a stern warning to maritime operators, vessel owners, and businesses operating within port areas. The Commission made it clear that any attempts to obstruct FCCC officers in the execution of their duties will not be tolerated.
According to FCCC, its officers possess the legal authority to board vessels, access ports, and enter business premises to monitor and enforce designated passenger fares and freight charges, particularly during the bustling festive travel season. With a significant increase in maritime travel expected, FCCC officers have been deployed to major wharves and ports in the Central and Northern divisions, now working extended hours under a newly implemented shift-based enforcement system to ensure ongoing oversight.
It is emphasized that all maritime passenger fares and freight rates are subject to regulation by law, and any attempt to hinder FCCC officers can result in legal repercussions. Individuals found obstructing or interfering with the authorized officers could face charges.
FCCC is committed to closely monitoring passenger fares, ensuring accurate price displays, verifying compliance with approved rates, and observing the conduct of operators towards enforcement officers throughout this festive season. Passengers are encouraged to report any instances of fare overcharging or unfair treatment, as the FCCC enhances its efforts to safeguard consumers and uphold the integrity of Fiji’s maritime transport sector.
This initiative reflects a proactive approach amidst rising consumer concerns, aiming to create a fair and transparent environment for travelers in Fiji. The Commission’s enforcement measures serve as a reminder of their commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring that maritime operations adhere to established regulations.
