The Pacific Sexual and Gender Diversity Network (PSGDN) has voiced significant concerns regarding the exploitation of religious platforms in Fiji to promote damaging anti-LGBTQI+ rhetoric. According to PSGDN, certain religious leaders are utilizing places of worship, free-to-air television, and social media to spread stigmatizing views that further marginalize vulnerable communities.
Loata Tucika, the Interim Chief Executive of PSGDN, emphasized the critical need to balance freedom of religion and expression with the responsibilities inherent in such freedoms, particularly for those who hold influence in society. Tucika argues that the use of these platforms to share dehumanizing beliefs has repercussions that extend well beyond mere expression. Such rhetoric can generate fear, legitimize discrimination, and threaten the safety of individuals within affected communities.
In response to these troubling developments, PSGDN is calling on religious leaders throughout Fiji to refocus on their core spiritual responsibilities and avoid using their religious or media platforms to spread divisive or discriminatory messages. Additionally, the organization is advocating for the Online Safety Commission to closely monitor content on free-to-air television, particularly where religious commentary may veer into harmful or discriminatory territory.
PSGDN remains committed to promoting respectful dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and recognizing the inherent dignity of all individuals throughout the Pacific region, including those who are part of LGBTQI+ communities. This commitment embodies a hopeful vision for greater inclusivity, highlighting shared values of human rights and acceptance for everyone.
