Major flooding has impacted numerous regions across Fiji, with Rakiraki being notably affected following heavy rainfall that began early this morning. In response to the severe weather, police have taken the precautionary step of closing Rakiraki Town, effectively restricting access as floodwaters have submerged roads and surrounding communities.
Authorities have reported that the Naqoro Flats area is currently underwater, and many sections of the town remain flooded as rain persists. The situation has prompted a Flash Flood Warning for the entirety of Viti Levu, coupled with a Flash Flood Alert for all of Vanua Levu, highlighting the unsettled weather conditions prevailing in the region.
The Fiji Meteorological Service has informed the public that Tropical Cyclone URMIL, a Category 2 storm, is located to the west-southwest of Kadavu and is moving southeastward. The cyclone is generating active rain bands and strong northwesterly winds, contributing to the widespread adverse weather impacting much of the country.
Weather officials have cautioned that these conditions significantly increase the risk of flash flooding and river flooding, particularly in areas known for vulnerability to such events. As locals brace for continued rainfall and potential flooding, efforts are being mobilized to ensure the safety and wellbeing of communities.
