Drug trafficking is becoming a significant threat to the safety of coastal communities in Fiji, as vessels linked to drug cartels utilize the nation’s maritime islands for their illicit operations. Lavenia Naivalu, a representative from the Nacula district, has stressed the urgent need for improved border control and enhanced drug awareness efforts within these vulnerable communities.

Naivalu has raised concerns regarding the increasing trend of drug cartels operating in Fijian waters, highlighting the critical role that local leaders must play in supporting border control agencies. She emphasized that these communities are inadvertently affected by criminal enterprises that infringe upon their daily lives, particularly in light of recent drug seizures tied to trafficking routes that pass through their waters.

“I’m deeply concerned about how the drug trade is evolving in Fiji,” Naivalu stated, referring to significant drug raids that have been traced back to the Yasawa islands, which are situated close to local fishing and residential areas.

In response to this growing issue, Naivalu underscored the need to empower maritime communities by educating them on how to identify suspicious activities and vessels. She called on local police to engage with villages and provide essential training on recognizing warning signs linked to drug trafficking and the procedures for reporting any suspicious observations.

“We are asking our police to come to the villages and educate us on what to look for,” she explained. “If we see a yacht, what signs might suggest it could be transporting drugs? And if we do discover something, who should we contact?”

Next week, community leaders are scheduled to meet to delve deeper into these urgent concerns, focusing on local surveillance and increasing vigilance against potential drug-related threats.

The upcoming meeting aims to bolster community awareness, with hopes of inviting police to conduct training workshops aimed at reinforcing the region’s defenses against drug trafficking. By fostering a collaborative relationship between authorities and local communities, there is a hopeful outlook that Fiji can better protect its waters and ensure the safety and integrity of its coastal villages.
