The National Fire Authority (NFA) is taking significant steps to enhance disaster response capabilities by planning the establishment of a national rescue centre. This initiative aims to strengthen the response to major accidents and disasters across Fiji. Joel Israel, the Manager of Fire Safety and Compliance at NFA, emphasizes the need for the organization to be formally recognized as Fiji’s lead first responder, rather than simply being called to assist after incidents occur.
Currently, NFA addresses a broad spectrum of emergencies beyond just fires, and Israel has called for a coordinated approach that would involve collaboration with various agencies, including the Police, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, the Fiji Corrections Service, and others. This teamwork is aimed at creating a more effective emergency response framework.
In addition to the national rescue centre, NFA has plans to develop a new headquarters, which will feature a dedicated floor for the proposed facility. Israel noted, “We are not only looking for a financial mode, but we are looking solely at how the government responds to our request, if the government can facilitate its financing.” Encouragingly, the NFA has secured the land for this project, which has long been sought after.
Israel mentioned that the organization has engaged architects and is progressing with structural planning. By implementing a centralized rescue and emergency coordination centre, NFA aims to alleviate the pressure on existing disaster management systems and significantly enhance preparedness and response capabilities.
This forward-thinking initiative reflects a commitment to improving community safety and ensuring that Fiji is better prepared to handle emergencies, ultimately promoting a safer environment for all citizens.
