Fiji is focusing on enhancing its agriculture sector through increased collaboration with Malaysia, aiming for greater technology transfer and capacity building. Minister for Agriculture Tomasi Tunabuna announced the initiative following a recent meeting with the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Andrew Tukana, Malaysian Embassy representatives, and Fiji’s Ambassador to Malaysia. This meeting underscored potential areas where Malaysia could assist Fiji in its agricultural development.
Tunabuna highlighted that both nations share a strong primary sector base, making agriculture a vital component of their economies. He noted the importance of their similar climatic conditions and crop varieties, which create valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange. “Agriculture is also a significant contributor to the economy of Malaysia. We have previously learned a lot due to our similarities,” he stated, recognizing Malaysia’s extensive experience with commercial agriculture.
The Minister emphasized the past benefits Fiji gained from employing Malaysian cooperative models and funding systems, which have bolstered the agricultural sector in Malaysia. With an eye on future advancements, Tunabuna expressed interest in adopting technology-driven approaches from Malaysia to modernize Fiji’s agricultural practices.
Capacity building remains a crucial aspect of their discussions, with previous collaborations involving staff exchanges and training initiatives. Fijian officials have participated in agricultural studies at Malaysian universities to enhance local expertise in the field.
Tunabuna reinforced his commitment to ongoing engagement aimed at boosting productivity, strengthening farmer organizations, and supporting the sustainable growth of Fiji’s agriculture sector. This partnership presents a promising opportunity for Fiji to leverage Malaysian expertise in enhancing its agricultural development and ensuring long-term success.
