The Commerce and Business Development Ministry of Fiji is looking to broaden the export landscape for Fijian products beyond its traditional markets, which include Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan. Assistant Minister Sachida Nand has revealed that the government is currently in discussions with the European Union to explore new trade opportunities, emphasizing the importance of enhancing Fiji’s commercial environment.

Nand highlighted the Ministry’s dedication to assisting exporters in meeting international standards through collaboration with the Ministries of Trade and Agriculture, alongside efforts to promote the branding of Fijian goods. He stated, “We are also looking at exploring other market options so that we can achieve a global reach for our products.”

The partnership with the European Union presents a pivotal opportunity for expanding export possibilities and improving agri-commodity standards. The government is particularly focused on empowering young farmers and driving economic growth, vital elements for advancing in global trade. European Union Ambassador to the Pacific, Barbara Plinkert, affirmed this vision, noting the significant potential for income generation for Fiji’s populace.

Plinkert remarked, “So with this program, we are here to support the Fijian agribusiness sector and help small, medium, and micro enterprises build their businesses so that they can reach wider markets and eventually export to other parts of the world as they continue to grow.”

With the European Union’s commitment to aiding Fiji’s small and medium agribusinesses, there is an encouraging prospect for growth, enabling these enterprises to tap into larger markets and enhance their global export capacities. This collaboration signifies a positive step toward Fiji’s economic development and a promising future for its agricultural sector, offering hope and new opportunities for its businesses and farmers.
