Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has announced the completion of a crucial legislative and regulatory gap analysis for Fiji’s energy sector, with support from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The goal of this analysis is to ensure a just and inclusive energy transition in Fiji. During a recent session in Parliament, Tuisawau outlined that the study revealed deficiencies in Fiji’s current energy laws and policies, particularly noting their inadequacy in promoting renewable energy and the limited participation of the private sector.
He emphasized that the existing Electricity Act fails to prioritize renewable energy effectively, which in turn restricts competition, investment, and access within the energy sector. To tackle these challenges, the Ministry is actively engaging with stakeholders to discuss the findings of the report and to guide potential reforms to be presented to the Cabinet.
In addition to initiatives aimed at legislative change, Tuisawau brought attention to the Fiji Rural Electrification Fund (FREF), which has amassed around $18 million in funding from Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. This initiative seeks to improve rural electrification through solar PV-diesel hybrid systems, with a target of reaching approximately 300 communities across the country.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to minimize reliance on fossil fuels, diversify renewable energy sources, and ensure that every household in Fiji has access to safe and affordable electricity. This progressive vision coincides with ongoing national projects aimed at constructing efficient energy infrastructure and expanding access for underserved populations.
The government’s comprehensive strategy for developing renewable energy, marked by significant investments and proactive legislative analysis, reflects a strong commitment to a sustainable future.
