The Fiji Meteorological Service has announced the extension of a heavy rain alert now encompassing the entire country as widespread rainfall continues to impact the islands. Initially limited to the eastern portion of Viti Levu, the Yasawa Group, Northern Division, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu, the alert’s new scope reflects the ongoing influence of a persistently slow-moving trough of low pressure over the region.
According to the latest weather bulletin from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi, residents should anticipate cloud cover, showers, and periods of heavy rain, likely continuing until tomorrow. “Occasional rain, heavy at times, along with a few thunderstorms, is expected across the Fiji group,” the Met Office indicated, noting that forecast confidence remains moderate.
Rainfall measurements from Monday morning until Tuesday morning include significant totals from various locations: Tubenasolo recorded 94.0 mm, Nagado had 76.5 mm, Lautoka reported 74.0 mm, and Narayabale measured 68.0 mm among others.
Previous alerts have highlighted threats of flash flooding and disruptions to traffic as a result of localized heavy rains, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Recent reports had already pointed out that a similar pattern would pose risks to daily life, reflecting ongoing vigilance from authorities and communities alike.
Amid these challenging weather conditions, it is important for residents to remain vigilant, stay updated on weather forecasts, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Community cooperation is vital during such times, underlining the spirit of solidarity that helps individuals support each other in adverse weather scenarios.
While the rain may disrupt daily activities, it also replenishes local water supplies, which is essential for agriculture and sustenance in the community. By staying informed and prepared, residents can mitigate the impact of flooding and reinforce the resilience that characterizes life in Fiji.
