Fiji Strengthens UN Peacekeeping With Two Key Appointments

Fiji Expands UN Peacekeeping Footprint with Two New Appointments

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is demonstrating its unwavering commitment to international peacekeeping with the recent appointment of two distinguished officers to prominent positions at the United Nations. Colonel Daunivakasala Kalitabua Ravunakana has taken on the role of Military and Police Advisor to Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York. Colonel Ravunakana’s remarkable career spans over three decades, marked by deployments in various international missions, including Lebanon, Iraq, Timor-Leste, the Golan Heights, and the Sinai Peninsula. He holds degrees from the prestigious Royal Military College Duntroon in Australia and the National Defence University of the People’s Liberation Army in China, in addition to advanced qualifications in Strategic and Security Studies.

Moreover, Captain Merelesita Cakau has been promoted to Major and is set to serve as a Military Observer with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO). Major Cakau’s elevation represents a significant step in Fiji’s ongoing efforts to enhance gender representation within global peacekeeping initiatives, aligning with the nation’s commitment to inclusivity and diverse leadership.

Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the RFMF, extended his congratulations to both officers, commending their professionalism and dedication. He highlighted that their appointments reinforce Fiji’s persistent dedication to fostering international peace, stability, and collaboration in alignment with the United Nations’ mission.

These new roles not only signify personal accomplishments for Colonel Ravunakana and Major Cakau but also exemplify Fiji’s rich history and ongoing participation in global peacekeeping, which commenced in 1978. This legacy fortifies Fiji’s standing as a vital contributor to international stability, supported by the professionalism and dedication of its military personnel.

The RFMF’s commitment to excellence in peacekeeping bodes well for the future, illustrating how smaller nations like Fiji can have a substantial impact on global security efforts. This situation provides hope for continued progress in international peace initiatives, asserting the importance of collaboration and dedication to building a more peaceful world.
