The Fijian government is taking significant steps to monitor the welfare of workers participating in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, prioritizing fair treatment and safety across 496 locations in Australia. Minister for Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of Fijian laborers as they encounter various workplace challenges.
In a recent statement, Minister Singh highlighted the ministry’s ongoing partnership with the Australian government and approved employers to ensure that workers’ rights and conditions are adequately addressed. “We are proud of the progress made so far. Through ongoing dialogue and cooperation with Australian-approved employers, we have addressed many concerns and will continue to work on rectifying remaining issues,” he stated.
Given the extensive number of Fijian workers across Australia, Minister Singh acknowledged the impracticality of visiting every site but affirmed the government’s commitment to worker rights. His recent site visits, conducted from late October to mid-November, received positive responses, showcasing employers’ transparency and workers’ appreciation for the support they have received.
For any inquiries regarding the PALM scheme, Minister Singh urged that they be directed to the Employment Ministry to ensure prompt resolution. “The welfare of our workers is our top priority. With strong cooperation between Fiji and Australia, PALM continues to provide valuable skills, income, and opportunities for our people,” he emphasized.
