Fiji Expands First Home Grants for Low-Income Families Evicted from Informal Settlements

The Fijian government is set to enhance the First Home Ownership Initiative to further assist families being evicted from informal settlements, ensuring that vulnerable citizens are included in the housing agenda. Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, announced this expansion in Parliament, highlighting the initiative’s success since its launch in 2014, which has already aided thousands of Fijians in obtaining or constructing their first homes.

The newly proposed First Home Grant Assistance Programme for Low-Income Families Evicted from Informal Settlements will initially target families residing in Veidogo, Nabua Muslim League, and Kilikali settlements, whose combined household income does not exceed $30,000. Under this program, eligible families will receive either $50,000 for constructing their first home or $30,000 to purchase one.

To ensure fair and transparent allocation, the Ministry of Housing and the Housing Authority will jointly manage the program, applying a 10-year caveat to prevent early resale and safeguard public investments. For the pilot program, which is part of a broader budget of $3.5 million allocated for the 2025–2026 financial year, the government has set aside $500,000.

Once the Cabinet approves the initiative, it will be rolled out in phases, reflecting the Coalition Government’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable housing solutions. This aligns with previous efforts, as the government has dedicated $15 million to formalize informal settlements across the country, providing legitimate lease titles and improving essential services.

These proactive measures come amid ongoing challenges in the housing sector, particularly concerning the needs of families at risk of eviction. Historical factors have contributed to the struggles faced by those living in informal settlements, and the government’s multifaceted approach aims to alleviate these issues. With successful initiatives like the First Home Ownership Initiative already making an impact, there is renewed hope that the expansion will significantly improve living conditions for many Fijian families and foster a more inclusive housing landscape for the future.
