Epeli Laqeni, a former officer with the Fiji Corrections Service, has been denied bail by the Suva High Court following allegations of murder. He is accused of killing his de-facto partner in Nakasi between September 3 and September 5 of this year.
During a court appearance, Justice Dane Tuiqereqere conveyed the decision made by presiding Judge Usaia Ratuvili, who was not present. The court weighed the seriousness of the allegations and Laqeni’s admissions to police during a caution interview, which included details about the circumstances of the alleged crime.
Laqeni’s legal representation contended that their client, who has mobility issues requiring family assistance, should be granted bail. However, the judge noted that a recent medical report detailing the extent of his injuries was not submitted for consideration.
The case has been adjourned, with a plea hearing scheduled for the 23rd of this month. The delay provides an opportunity for a thorough examination of the evidence and circumstances surrounding the case, emphasizing the legal process’s importance in ensuring justice.
