Fiji Ex-Corrections Officer Faces Murder Charge in Nakasi as Court Seeks Key Disclosures

Former Fiji Corrections Service officer Epeli Laqeni has appeared at the Suva High Court, facing murder charges in connection with the death of his de facto partner in Nakasi. The incident allegedly took place between September 3 and 5 of this year. Laqeni appeared before Justice Waleen George, who questioned him about wounds he sustained during the alleged event.

Justice George emphasized the importance of the healing process, suggesting that Laqeni’s wounds should have healed unless he was avoiding medical attention. The court has ordered that Laqeni receive medical care at the remand center, as his legal representation indicated he is currently unable to stand or walk. Laqeni expressed concerns about the possibility of contracting HIV due to his wounds, leading Justice George to discuss the nature of HIV transmission.

Meanwhile, State Counsel Naazish Ali informed the court that necessary disclosures remain pending, including a post-mortem report still awaited from police. Ali mentioned that the post-mortem examination is finished, but the examining doctor is currently on leave. Additionally, the translation of a video-recorded interview with Laqeni is not yet available. Ali committed to providing these disclosures to the defense counsel by the next court date.

The case has been adjourned to the 17th of this month before Judge Justice Daniel Goundar. This incident sheds light on ongoing concerns regarding domestic violence in Fiji, echoing similar recent cases that have highlighted the need for timely reporting and legal diligence in such serious matters. Authorities continue to stress the importance of thorough investigations and proper legal processes to address domestic violence, reinforcing a societal commitment to justice and safety for all individuals involved.
