Fiji Evicts 124 Families Over Aging Housing Estate

One hundred and twenty-four families residing at the Public Rental Board (PRB) property along Mead Road in Nabua, Fiji, have been given a two-month notice to vacate. PRB General Manager Timoci Naleba explained that the decision was prompted by safety concerns due to the property’s aging structure, which engineers have declared unsafe. The property, which has been in existence for over seven decades, poses a significant risk during seismic events and needs immediate vacating.

The PRB is working in collaboration with the Housing Authority to assist the affected tenants, ensuring they have first priority for alternative housing. Families in need of assistance are encouraged to visit Housing Authority offices for guidance. Once vacated, the PRB plans to consult with experts to determine the optimal future use of the land.

Naleba emphasized the legal requirement for tenant safety as a primary reason for the action. He reassured that PRB has been proactive in addressing relocation concerns, working since last year on plans for demolition of the estate in phases, starting with Block 5 by the end of 2025. The subsequent removal of Blocks 1 to 4, projected for 2026, reflects the estate’s critical condition.

The Public Rental Board’s efforts align with broader government initiatives to tackle housing needs in Fiji, including the provision of affordable housing options. With increasing demand, reflected by over 200 applications this fiscal year, the need for about 1,600 new affordable units annually is pressing. PRB and government programs are aiming to meet these requirements through ongoing development projects and assistance to vulnerable populations.

The situation also highlights PRB’s commitment to community safety as it actively addresses issues within its estates, such as evicting tenants involved in illegal activities. Security measures are continually being reviewed and improved for better resident safety. Through these concerted efforts, the PRB and the Housing Authority hope to turn these challenges into opportunities for building safer, more supportive communities for Fijian families.
