The Construction Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) has announced plans for a strike by employees of Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) beginning on February 15, amid an ongoing industrial dispute with the utility provider. This decision came shortly after EFL expressed its hope for a resolution through continued dialogue.

EFL’s chief executive, Fatiaki Gibson, conveyed a message of optimism, stating that he hopes “good sense will prevail” during this difficult time and urged members of CETWUF and its leadership to collaborate. However, tensions escalated when CETWUF chose to withdraw from voluntary mediation efforts that were part of collective bargaining discussions mediated by the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Industrial Relations.

On February 7, CETWUF formally communicated to the ministry its decision to forgo mediation, opting instead for resolution through the Arbitration Court, with proceedings scheduled for March 23. The impending strike action highlights the ongoing struggles workers face in securing fair bargaining conditions with their employer.

Despite the current tensions, there is still a possibility for the situation to improve before the strike begins. This unfolding scenario not only reflects the labor dynamics in Fiji but also emphasizes the critical importance of constructive discussions in addressing labor disputes and enhancing workplace relations. The hope remains that both parties can find common ground and avoid further escalation.
