Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh expressed optimism regarding the ongoing negotiations between Energy Fiji Ltd and approximately 500 of its employees. The workers, represented by the Construction, Energy and Timber Workers Union (CETWUF), had issued a strike notice in December concerning salary-related issues projected between 2024 and 2025.

The employees threatened to initiate a walk-out on February 15 if their concerns remain unresolved. However, a voluntary mediation session took place on January 19, attended by both parties and the Ministry of Employment and Industrial Relations. Singh described the initial meeting as productive and noted that it marks the beginning of further discussions.

“The first session of mediation went very well,” Singh stated. “The next one is scheduled for next Monday, and we are confident we will reach a settlement within the coming week.”

This constructive dialogue bodes well for both the management and the workforce, as it aims to address and resolve the salary issues that could impact the employees’ livelihoods. The government’s involvement reflects a commitment to fostering a collaborative approach to labor relations.
