Fiji Employment Ministry Defends Inspection Amid Bias Claims

The Employment Ministry in Fiji has strongly rejected accusations from the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) regarding alleged bias during a recent inspection targeting a specific company. According to Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh, the claims are baseless. An internal investigation determined that the inspection was standard procedure and part of a regulatory check that also included three other workplaces within the same vicinity.

Minister Singh highlighted that the employer involved was found in violation of the Employment Relations Act, specifically for not maintaining required wage and time records as well as failing to provide wage statements. He emphasized that these issues are serious breaches that necessitated prompt action to safeguard workers’ rights. To rectify these violations, the ministry has issued a 30-day notice giving the employer time to comply before a follow-up review takes place.

Singh affirmed the Ministry’s support for the labor officers executing their responsibilities within the legal framework, emphasizing their commitment to protect workers’ rights. He also pointed out the suspicious timing of the FCEF’s allegations, which surfaced amid ongoing parliamentary reviews of the Employment Relations Amendment Bill.

The Employment Ministry encourages direct communication to clarify any misunderstandings instead of public claims.
