Fiji Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne expressed enthusiasm over the new pool draw for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, emphasizing the refreshing change after years of facing the same opponents. Fiji has historically competed against Australia and Wales in four consecutive World Cups, but the upcoming tournament in Australia promises a break from that pattern.
Byrne is optimistic about this shift in competition, believing it not only introduces a new dynamic but also creates exciting opportunities for his players. “It’s been good,” he remarked, reflecting on the conclusion of the Australia–Wales cycle. “Fiji have played Australia and Wales over the last couple of World Cups, so it’s good to have a mix of other teams. I think that makes it exciting for us.”
During the pool stage, Fiji will encounter Argentina, Spain, and Canada. Byrne notes that while these matchups will present familiar yet fresh challenges, they also offer the chance to face high-ranking teams. “You know, the beauty is we’re playing Argentina,” he stated. He mentioned that among the highest-ranked teams, Fiji has played against France and England before, and faced Ireland last year, indicating a strategic buildup with competitive play.
As part of their preparation for the World Cup, Fiji’s lead-up schedule includes matches against several top-tier nations. Byrne believes this rigorous schedule will be vital in ensuring the team is well-prepared for the challenges ahead in the tournament. With a blend of familiar faces and new rivals, the Flying Fijians are poised to make their mark in 2027.
