The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has dismissed allegations that inadequate consultations are taking place regarding the proposed increase in electricity tariffs. This statement comes in response to concerns voiced by residents of Labasa, who expressed dissatisfaction with Energy Fiji Limited’s (EFL) plan for a 32 percent price hike over the next four years.

Local residents described the consultation session as more of an awareness initiative or promotional event rather than a genuine dialogue. They noted the absence of senior officials and criticized the lack of direct engagement with the community.

In defense of the consultation process, FCCC Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta stated that the consultations are designed to be one-on-one, allowing individuals to engage directly with officers. She emphasized that the process is sincere and not merely a “box-ticking exercise,” highlighting that officers are actively meeting with the public and documenting their feedback.

FCCC teams are presently conducting consultations across the Northern and Western Divisions, with sessions in the Central Division scheduled to commence next week. Jiuta will personally attend the upcoming consultation in Nadi, set to take place at FNPF Plaza from 10 AM to 3 PM, and has encouraged Fijians to engage with her directly.

In addition, FCCC has reached out to key organizations, including business groups and NGOs, inviting them to provide written feedback and participate in roundtable discussions. The commission clarified that the tariff increase proposal originated from Energy Fiji Limited, not from the FCCC itself. EFL representatives will be available at consultation sites to address technical inquiries, while FCCC officers will elaborate on the process and document public opinion.

A 21-day consultation period has been established for the community to voice their opinions. To assist in understanding the potential impact on bills, FCCC has introduced a Bill Calculator that allows users to see how their electricity costs may change. The commission has urged residents to report information accurately, noting that misinformation can hinder public engagement.

FCCC is committed to ensuring that residents have ample opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns about the proposed tariff change, reinforcing the importance of community participation in this critical dialogue.
