The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has expressed concern over misleading reports regarding ongoing electricity tariff consultations in the Northern Division. FCCC Chief Executive Officer Senikavika Jiuta has clarified that these consultations are genuinely designed to give every Fijian an opportunity to voice their opinions.

Jiuta vehemently disputes claims that proper consultations are not taking place, reiterating the FCCC’s commitment to actively engage with the public. This week, the FCCC has organized one-on-one sessions in major towns and cities across the Northern and Western Divisions, with plans to extend these efforts to the Central Division next week, signaling a strong commitment to community outreach.

The consultations are not just routine procedures, as Jiuta explained that the FCCC is focused on holding thorough face-to-face meetings where they can collect feedback directly from residents. “We are recording views and concerns regarding the tariff submissions directly from the public,” she stated, emphasizing their hands-on approach.

Moreover, Jiuta will be present at the upcoming consultation session in Nadi, scheduled at the FNPF Plaza from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., inviting individuals to meet with her personally. This move underscores the FCCC’s dedication to transparency and accessibility throughout the consultation process.

In addition to public engagement, the FCCC is also reaching out to key organizations to encourage broader participation. Significant stakeholders, including the Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation, the Fiji Chamber of Commerce, and various consumer groups have been contacted to ensure diverse perspectives are represented in the discussions.

To further assist consumers in understanding the proposed tariff changes, the FCCC has launched a ‘Bill Calculator’ tool. This element allows users to enter their electricity usage and see firsthand how the proposed tariffs would impact their bills, ultimately promoting transparency and consumer empowerment.

Jiuta has warned that any misrepresentation of the consultations could hinder the public’s ability to engage meaningfully in this crucial dialogue. The FCCC has provided a 21-day window for all interested parties to submit their feedback, highlighting the importance of community participation in determining the future of electricity tariffs in Fiji. Through open communication and informative tools, the FCCC aims to ensure a fair and inclusive consultation process that benefits all Fijians.
