The Fiji Teachers Registration Authority (FTRA) and the Ministry of Education are spearheading initiatives aimed at transforming the educational landscape in Fiji. During the recent 2025 Education Congress, Ratu Kadavulevu School Principal Ilaisa Tukana Waqalala spoke on the pressing challenges teachers currently face in their classrooms.
Waqalala highlighted that the Congress provided practical strategies that empower educators to address learning disparities and meet contemporary teaching demands. He emphasized the importance of adaptability in the education sector, stating, “We have to resort to other ways. We need to go with a change. We need to change ourselves. We need to change the way we think. And we need to change how we operate,” particularly within renowned institutions such as RKS and QVS.
Continuous professional development and leadership growth are crucial for enhancing student outcomes, according to Waqalala. FTRA Chief Executive Sangeeta Singh reinforced this perspective by noting that the Congress supports teachers in fulfilling their professional development obligations, mentioning, “In order to renew teacher registration in Fiji, teachers are expected to at least complete minimum 20 hours of professional development.”
The overarching goal of the 2025 Education Congress is to equip educators with essential skills and modern knowledge. This strategic effort aims to transform teaching practices, bridge learning gaps, and foster a progressive educational system. The Congress successfully brought together educators and stakeholders under the theme, “Transforming Education: Closing Gaps, Connecting Minds and Shaping Tomorrow,” demonstrating a collective commitment towards uplifting education in Fiji for a brighter future.
