Riyadh kicked off a historic Royal Rumble weekend as WWE superstar Matt Cardona shared his excitement about the Kingdom and its enthusiastic fans ahead of the much-anticipated wrestling event scheduled for Saturday. This occasion marks the first “Big Five” WWE event of the year and the inaugural traditional Royal Rumble to be held outside of North America.

The event will take place at the impressive KAFD Arena, which was built in an astonishing 35 days and boasts a capacity of around 25,000 attendees, featuring an open-roof design alongside striking architectural elements that promise a one-of-a-kind experience.

WWE has steadily increased its global presence, holding significant events in the Middle East and Europe, allowing fans in Saudi Arabia and beyond to witness their beloved wrestlers live. Cardona highlighted the deepening relationship between WWE and Riyadh Season, recounting his adventures since arriving in the Kingdom.

“We went to Six Flags, we rode the tallest, longest roller coaster, then we get to wrestle,” said Cardona, who holds accolades such as the WWE US title and the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. “For me, as a big fan, a big kid, getting to go to Six Flags when I get to wrestle, this is a dream come true.”

Saudi Arabia has developed a significant fandom for professional wrestling over the years, providing generations who grew up watching matches on television the opportunity to experience live events featuring their favorite stars. This transformation from dream to reality aligns with the collaboration between WWE and the Saudi General Entertainment Authority, mirroring the entertainment aspirations outlined in Saudi Vision 2030.

Cardona emphasized the vibrant energy of Saudi fans, reflecting on their spirited support during meet-and-greets. “The fans here are so energetic and loud,” he noted. “Even yesterday, we were just doing meet-and-greets, photo ops, and autographs, and they’re chanting like we’re already in the ring. They’re bringing the energy. They’re going to bring it to SmackDown, to Royal Rumble, and, next year, to WrestleMania.”

The partnership between WWE and Saudi authorities has successfully brought several notable events to the Kingdom, such as Crown Jewel, Elimination Chamber, and King and Queen of the Ring. While the date for WrestleMania 43 in Riyadh remains under wraps, the growing excitement for professional wrestling in the region is undeniably palpable.
