The Fiji Teachers Registration Authority (FTRA) and the Ministry of Education are leading impactful initiatives aimed at reshaping education in Fiji. At the recent 2025 Education Congress, Ilaisa Tukana Waqalala, Principal of Ratu Kadavulevu School, addressed the significant challenges teachers face in today’s classrooms.
Waqalala noted that the Congress provided valuable strategies designed to empower educators in tackling learning disparities and adapting to contemporary teaching needs. He stressed the necessity for flexibility within the education sector, asserting, “We have to resort to other ways. We need to go with a change. We need to change ourselves. We need to change the way we think. And we need to change how we operate,” particularly in esteemed institutions like RKS and QVS.
The importance of continuous professional development and enhancing leadership skills was a key theme in Waqalala’s address, emphasizing their role in improving student outcomes. FTRA Chief Executive Sangeeta Singh echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the Congress aids teachers in meeting their professional development requirements. She stated, “In order to renew teacher registration in Fiji, teachers are expected to at least complete minimum 20 hours of professional development.”
The main objective of the 2025 Education Congress is to equip educators with essential skills and contemporary knowledge. This strategic endeavor aims to modernize teaching practices, close learning gaps, and cultivate a progressive educational framework. The event successfully united educators and stakeholders under the theme, “Transforming Education: Closing Gaps, Connecting Minds and Shaping Tomorrow,” showcasing a shared dedication to elevating education in Fiji for a hopeful and prosperous future.
