Two men facing charges related to alleged drug offenses were absent from their scheduled hearing in the Magistrates Court today, following their arrests last year at a Public Rental Board property on Mead Road in Suva.
Mikaele Kolikeinakorotubu was notably missing from the court proceedings, prompting the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest. Meanwhile, his co-accused, Laisiasa Bavai, remained in custody but also failed to appear in person. His production order has been extended, and he is now set to appear in court on March 4.
The arrests were made after a police operation in Nabua, where personnel from the Southern Division Police executed a raid on one of the housing units. Reports indicate that the two men attempted to dispose of evidence by throwing a bag into nearby bushes during the operation.
Upon searching the area, police recovered a black sling bag containing three zip-lock packets filled with white, crystal-like substances that are believed to be methamphetamine. Additionally, assorted cash amounting to $5,560 was found, raising suspicions that the money may be linked to the proceeds of illegal drug sales.
Both men face serious charges, including unlawful possession of illicit drugs and resisting arrest. The case is set to be revisited in court next month, leaving the community and authorities alert to the ongoing issues surrounding drug-related offenses.
