Fiji Drug Case Involving Officers Sparks Bail Battle

A 37-year-old man, Eroni Kitanamati, has been remanded in custody by the Suva Magistrates Court in connection with a significant drug case that also involves police officers. Kitanamati is charged with the unlawful importation of 4.7 kg of illicit liquids, reportedly liquid methamphetamine. The alleged offenses occurred between September 11 and 12, amid an ongoing investigation that has already led to charges against two police officers.

During his court appearance, Chief Magistrate Josaia Waqaivolavola directed the defense lawyer to submit a notice of motion for Kitanamati’s bail review by October 22, with the State expected to respond by October 24. The hearing for the bail application is scheduled to commence on October 27.

This case is part of a troubling pattern, as the involvement of law enforcement personnel in drug-related offenses raises significant concerns about integrity within Fiji’s police force. Previous cases, such as those involving police officers Sevuloni Lubi and Lote Lewaivanua, who also faced serious drug-related charges, have seen consistent judicial action, including the denial of bail in light of the potential for witness interference and the serious nature of the allegations.

Fijian authorities are actively working to combat drug trafficking through rigorous investigations and collaborations among various police units. The determination to dismantle drug networks reflects a broader commitment to public safety and reinforces trust in the judicial system. As legal proceedings unfold, there remains strong hope that thorough judicial action will not only address current offenses but also deter future drug-related crimes, ultimately fostering a safer environment for the citizens of Fiji.
