The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) has officially recognized World Boxing (WB) as the governing body for amateur boxing in Fiji. This designation establishes WB as the sole pathway for local boxers to qualify for major international events, including the Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games, and Pacific Games. This decision comes amidst Fiji’s ongoing evaluation of its relationship with the International Boxing Association (IBA).

FASANOC’s CEO, Vanessa Kilner, emphasized the importance of this decision, stating that it aligns with the guidelines of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which has withdrawn recognition from the IBA due to various governance issues. Kilner stated, “As the National Olympic Committee for Fiji, we take our cue from the IOC. They recognize World Boxing, and they no longer recognize the IBA.” This shift not only underscores WB’s credibility but also enhances clarity in the journey local athletes must undertake to pursue their Olympic dreams.

By aligning with World Boxing, FASANOC aims to create a transparent and straightforward pathway for amateur boxers in Fiji aspiring to participate in IOC-sanctioned events. Kilner noted, “In Fiji, we have chosen World Boxing, and this means that the pathway to the Olympics and other IOC-sanctioned events is very clear.”

Amateur boxers eager to compete in the Commonwealth Games, Pacific Games, or the Olympics are urged to follow the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association’s guidelines to secure their eligibility for these esteemed competitions. Kilner also recommended that those invited to participate in IBA-sanctioned events or any boxing competitions outside of WB consult with the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association. This step is crucial to ensure that such participation does not jeopardize their chances for IOC-organized events.

FASANOC’s proactive commitment to developing a robust framework for amateur boxing signifies a positive step for Fiji’s athletes, ensuring they have optimal opportunities to excel on the world stage. This initiative not only strengthens the sport domestically but also reinforces Fiji’s position within the international boxing community.
