The Mineral Resources Department has emphasized the significance of adhering to these regulations, highlighting that any breaches could result in substantial penalties, including fines up to $400 or imprisonment for up to six months.
Fireworks are categorized under the UN Hazard Classification System as Class 1.3 and 1.4 explosives, which are not to be considered toys. Class 1.3 fireworks are reserved for public displays conducted by licensed operators, while Class 1.4 varieties can be sold for private use over the counter, although they must be handled with care.
The department has made a strong appeal for community members to be mindful and respectful of the Hindu community’s prayer time on Diwali Day, which occurs from 6 PM to 7 PM. This appeal reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that safety and cultural sensitivities coexist during the festivities.
In conjunction with these guidelines, previous measures include a public reminder regarding the need for supervision when children are using fireworks. The Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources also emphasizes that homemade fireworks, such as bamboo guns, are illegal, and only individuals aged 18 and older are permitted to purchase fireworks. Furthermore, adults are advised to refrain from smoking or consuming alcohol while handling such materials, ensuring a safe environment for everyone involved.
