Concerns regarding children’s exposure to social media have arisen in Natuvusila District, coinciding with the area’s first access to electricity. The village in Navosa Province recently celebrated this significant milestone; however, local leaders have voiced apprehensions about the accompanying digital risks for families.

District representative Orisi Kubunadakai highlighted the growing anxiety surrounding children’s access to online platforms, a concern that extends beyond Natuvusila to communities nationwide. He emphasized the necessity for families to remain vigilant and actively monitor the use of electronic devices at home.

In preparation for this transition, Kubunadakai noted that the district organized training sessions focused on the responsible use of social media before electricity was introduced. He expressed the community’s worries regarding the potential impacts of electronic gadgets on children, stating, “We have gone through a training to give us a heads up on this.”

While acknowledging that the arrival of electricity paves the way for education and advancements, Kubunadakai also called for continued guidance and oversight to ensure young people’s safety in the digital realm. This electrification project, which cost $5.4 million, is now benefiting over 2,000 villagers by providing them with power, light, and enhanced connectivity.

Community leaders are optimistic that the training sessions will foster safer digital habits among families as they navigate the increasing challenges of the online world in Fiji. The focus is on striking a balance between embracing new technologies and ensuring that children are protected from potential online dangers.
