Fijians residing in New Zealand are calling for significant improvements in the electoral process to address challenges they faced during past General Elections. Sai Lealea, the New Zealand representative of the People’s Alliance party, highlighted that ballot papers have often been delayed or sent to incorrect addresses, resulting in unfair voting outcomes.
Lealea expressed that these logistical issues can lead to the counting of votes being completed before valued ballots from overseas voters are counted, which undermines the democratic process. He raised this concern during the People’s Alliance party’s annual general meeting, which took place at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva over the weekend.
In his remarks, Lealea urged the Fijian government to implement changes allowing voters living abroad to submit their ballots directly to their respective High Commissions or embassies. This process would not only simplify the return of ballots but would also ensure their timely counting, thus better reflecting the voices of Fijians overseas in the electoral process.
Acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga acknowledged the complaints raised by Lealea and mentioned that he encountered similar sentiments during his recent visit to the Fijian community in New Zealand. He assured attendees that the government is committed to addressing these concerns.
The suggestion for reform aligns with Lealea’s broader vision for increasing engagement with Fijians living abroad, as he believes it is crucial for citizens, no matter where they reside, to feel connected and involved in their homeland’s governance. This notion emphasizes a substantial commitment to fostering inclusivity in the democratic process, ensuring that voices from the diaspora are not only acknowledged but actively sought in shaping the nation’s policies.
The ongoing discussions about enhancing electoral procedures reflect a hopeful trend towards a more inclusive and accessible democracy in Fiji. By addressing these systemic challenges, there is an optimistic outlook for reforms that will empower all Fijians, ensuring their rights and voices are upheld regardless of their geographical location.
