Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, appeared before the Suva Magistrates Court for an update regarding his application for permanent stay, which is currently under review by the High Court.
During the proceedings, defense counsel Wylie Clarke informed the court that the High Court hearing is scheduled for March 18, and it is likely that the Magistrates Court will reconvene in April to review the case further. In contrast, the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption urged that the Magistrates Court proceedings should continue as planned, with the plea being addressed.
Kamikamica is facing charges of perjury and, alternatively, providing false information to a public servant. These charges stem from investigations related to the Commission of Inquiry report on the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the FICAC Commissioner. It is alleged that between December 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, in Suva, Kamikamica knowingly made a false statement under oath, asserting he had no involvement in the appointment process. He is also accused of providing the same misleading information to the Commissioner of Inquiry, which falls under section 201(a) of the Crimes Act 2009.
The case has been adjourned, with a new date set for April 14 to address the plea. As the investigation and legal processes unfold, it remains crucial for all parties involved to ensure justice and transparency in accordance with the law.
