The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) has highlighted ongoing challenges with border security and revenue collection due to issues such as false declarations, mislabeling of goods, and illegal narcotics imports. Over the past two years, the FRCS has faced a consistent number of such cases at ports of entry, prompting increased efforts to address these challenges.
To combat these violations, the FRCS is actively educating importers on legal requirements and the implications of non-compliance. Chief Executive Udit Singh informed that numerous penalties have been issued to non-compliant taxpayers and importers, with a significant portion already collected and the remainder undergoing enforcement action.
Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling illicit imports. An important part of the strategy includes the installation of container X-ray facilities at all ports, facilitated by support from the Australian government. Additionally, regulations have been amended concerning the stay and registration of yachts in Fiji to strengthen maritime security.
FRCS highlights that various initiatives have been implemented to enhance border security, including targeted inspections and collaborative operations. Significant efforts in recent years demonstrated collaborative successes, as highlighted by previous operations that uncovered illegal goods, including high-value dutiable items concealed in everyday objects like used water bottles. This underlines the sophistication of smuggling methods being employed and the necessity for stringent enforcement measures.
