Rural infrastructure in Fiji’s Northern Division is set for transformative advancements with the recent introduction of state-of-the-art heavy machinery at the Public Works Department (PWD) located at the Vatunibale Depot in Labasa. This modern fleet, which includes cutting-edge excavators and robust trucks, is dedicated to road maintenance, construction, and essential drainage work throughout the northern region.
Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau emphasized that the ministry has earmarked funds to hire additional staff to operate the advanced machinery, creating job opportunities while enhancing service efficiency. Addressing the high turnover of technical staff, the initiative plans to re-employ experienced former personnel, ensuring the department benefits from their expertise.
This strategic investment is a significant government focus on improving rural accessibility, providing the Northern Division communities with more resilient and reliable road networks. The newly acquired equipment is slated for immediate deployment to support ongoing road upgrades in rural and maritime areas, which are vital for efficient goods transportation, accessible educational facilities, and overall improved connectivity across Vanua Levu.
This latest enhancement follows the government’s decision last year to reactivate the PWD, reflecting continued efforts to bolster infrastructure through machinery upgrades. Previously, the acquisition of similar equipment, including trucks and bulldozers, has enhanced the department’s capacity to manage and complete infrastructure projects, particularly in isolated locales.
The introduction of this new machinery represents a progressive move towards invigorating rural Fiji’s infrastructure. It promises not only to transform the physical landscape but also to spur economic growth and improve community well-being by guaranteeing better access and transit routes. This ongoing investment in both heavy machinery and workforce skills highlights the government’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development in rural areas, positioning the region for a brighter future.
